It acts as an external artificial oxygenation system that supports patients during acute medical crises or until their physiological functions are gradually restored. This therapy is of central importance in situations ranging from bridging therapy for disease recovery to complex medical decisions such as organ transplantation and the implantation of ventricular assist devices. While ECMO can be life-saving, it also comes with significant challenges, including high complication rates and resource requirements. Complications can range from kidney failure and infections to mechanical problems with ECMO devices. Early detection of these complications is key to improving patient outcomes.

Our pilot project at Frankfurt University Hospital is pioneering the analysis of continuous routine data from ECMO devices. By integrating these data streams with patient data, we aim to uncover patterns and signals that could predict complications. Our vision is to make ECMO more predictive and patient-centred, which will ultimately lead to better outcomes and a reduced workload for medical staff in intensive care units.

Follow the progress of the ECMO Reader project and see how data-driven intensive care medicine is changing. Every step we take brings us closer to a new era in critical care, where closely monitored ECMO therapy leads to better patient management, improved outcomes and a redefined approach to complex medical challenges.

Integrating ECMO Treatment with Advanced Data Analysis At Data Science Group Frankfurt, we are at the forefront of transforming critical care through the power of data analytics.
