Advancing COVID-19 Patient Treatment and Recovery
Intensive care units are complex and high-risk workplaces, and the rapid and often changing health conditions of COVID-19 patients present significant challenges for intensivists and other medical staff. Insufficient data and limited knowledge about the disease, as well as the lack of tools to support decision-making, are key reasons for the high mortality rates of COVID-19 patients in ICUs. As the coordinators of the ENVISION project, a consortium of 19 partners from 13 European countries, the Data Science Group Frankfurt at Goethe University has successfully steered the development and implementation of the pioneering digital tool, Sandman.IC, which was completed in the summer of 2023.
Our aim was to extend the capabilities of the existing Sandman.MD tool, primarily used for perioperative anaesthetic monitoring, to a comprehensive application for long-term ICU usage. The result was Sandman.IC, a tool designed to assist intensivists and ICU staff in real-time monitoring, prediction, and treatment of COVID-19 patients. Through continuous surveillance and intelligent analysis of multifaceted data, including inputs from ventilators and electrical impedance tomography (EIT), Sandman.IC empowers clinicians with critical insights for optimal patient treatment.
The completion of the ENVISION project under our coordination marks a significant milestone in ICU care. It also provides invaluable support in the search for new therapies. The project’s big data-driven alert system is a testament to our commitment to reducing human error and easing the burden on clinical staff.
