The ECMO Dashboard

A Beacon for Informed Healthcare in Germany

At the Data Science Group Frankfurt, we take pride in our commitment to patients and society by leveraging Big Data to enhance healthcare delivery. Our latest initiative, the ECMO Dashboard, is a testament to this commitment—a digital tool that transforms cryptical administrative healthcare data into actionable insights for medical professionals, policy makers, and society at large.

The ECMO Dashboard provides an interactive, visually engaging, and comprehensive overview of ECMO therapies across Germany. By amalgamating data from the German Federal Statistical Office and hospital quality reports, we offer a granular view of ECMO utilisation, highlighting regions with surpluses or deficits and guiding resource allocation in this critical area of care. Using advanced statistical methods, the ECMO Dashboard forecasts future ECMO workloads and resource requirements, helping to preemptively balance the scales of supply and demand. This is particularly crucial in high-stress scenarios like pandemics or seasonal infection waves, where the right allocation of resources can mean the difference between life and death.

Beyond the immediate crisis, the ECMO dashboard is an important contribution against future health threats, with its integrated prediction tool continuously refined to inform ECMO allocation strategies effectively. Recognizing the challenges posed by the retrospective nature of available data, we advocate for policy shifts that grant researchers earlier access to billing data, enhancing the dashboard’s predictive capabilities. Through this innovative approach, we underscore our dedication to developing healthcare management tools that not only support medical staff but also uphold the tenets of transparency and trust within the German healthcare system. The ECMO Dashboard is a step towards a future where Big Data is not just about numbers but about real, impactful actions for patient-centred care and the resilience of healthcare systems against national health crises.
